(RV) Women’s Basketball Falls to Southeastern at Home

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (January 17, 2024) - The (RV) St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Basketball team faced Southeastern University on Wednesday evening for the first time in Sun Conference play. The Bobcats hosted the Fire, competing in a well-fought match, but ultimately falling to them 69-60. 

The Bobcats started out hot, scoring 10 points and holding the fire off for the first five minutes of the match up. Sophie Vandyke kicked off the game with the first jump shot within 15 seconds of tipoff and notching another two points just a minute later. Vandyke was consistent throughout the whole game, recording a double-double performance with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Bobcats held the lead at the end of the first quarter, 15-9. 

The Fire attempted to narrow the gap in quarter two, outscoring the Bobcats 24-18. Vandyke continued to make her presence known, notching four more points in the second quarter. Camilla Flefill entered the game off the bench, recording five points of her own, contributing to her eight-point total. The Fire closed in on the Bobcats, tying the score into the intermission, 33-33. 

The fight continued into the second half. Marta Franco added five more points to her existing five, contributing to her total of 15 for the game. The Bobcats were down by four entering the final quarter with a score of 48-52. 

The game wasn't over yet. Franco managed to put up five more points and three more assists on the Fire in the final quarter. Bria Brown added three points of her own in quarter four, adding to her tally. Brown finished the game in the double digits with 10 points. The Bobcats ultimately fell to the Fire, 60-71. This loss brings the Bobcats record to 13-4 overall and 3-1 in Sun Conference play. 

Up next, the Bobcats will host Ave Maria University on Saturday, January 20th at 2 p.m. in the Fernandez Family Center.
