MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (January 5, 2024) - The St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Basketball team begins Sun Conference play on Saturday afternoon to kick off the second half of their 2023-2024 season. They will face College of Coastal Georgia in their first Sun Conference matchup of the season on the road in Brunswick, Ga.
In their last meeting, the Bobcats defeated the Mariners 65-54 at the Fernandez Family Center, Brooke Bogatz leading the charge with 15 points in the game. The Bobcats lead in series history, defeating the Mariners 11 times and falling to them only 4 times. Coastal Georgia is currently 5-6 this season. The Bobcats will face off against the Mariners on Saturday, January 6th at 2 p.m. in Brunswick, Ga. They will meet again at home on Saturday, February 3rd at 2 p.m. in the Fernandez Family Center.
A LOOK AHEAD
The Bobcats are entering Sun Conference play with a record of 10-3 after competing against some notable opponents. After Saturday's match up against Coastal Georgia, the Bobcats will take on Florida Memorial University on Wednesday, January 10th at 5:30 p.m. at home. The Bobcats fell to the Lions in their last meeting in 2023 after defeating them earlier in the season. Florida Memorial went on to win the Sun Conference Championship last season after defeating the Southeastern University Fire. The Lions are currently 8-4 as they enter Sun Conference play. The second Battle of Miami Gardens will take place on the road on Wednesday, February 7th at 5:30 p.m.
From there, the Bobcats will face Warner University, whom they have defeated 33 out 34 times in series history. They will also face Webber International University and Ave Maria University during Sun Conference play, two teams who the Bobcats went 1-1 with in the 2022-2023 season.
St. Thomas will also face Keiser University twice during the 2023-2024 home-and-away slate. The Bobcats defeated the Seahawks twice last season, bringing their overall series history to 26-9. The Seahawks are currently 8-6 this season as they enter Sun Conference play.
A highly anticipated matchup for the Bobcats this season is Southeastern University. The Bobcats went 1-1 against the Fire last season, falling to the Fire at home then going on to defeat them on the road. Southeastern took the Bobcats down in postseason play during the Sun Conference Tournament Semifinal matchup where they outscored the Bobcats 101-96. Southeastern ultimately fell to Florida Memorial University in the Championship game. The Fire will enter Sun Conference play with a record of 9-4. The Bobcats will host the Fire on Wednesday, January 17th at 5:30 p.m. St. Thomas will then travel to Lakeland, Fla. On Wednesday, February 14th at 5:30 p.m.
