Women's Basketball Defeats Coastal Georgia in Sun Conference Opener

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (January 6, 2023) - The St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Basketball team traveled to in Brunswick, Ga. to face off against the College of Coastal Georgia for their Sun Conference opening game. The Bobcats showcased their prowess on the court, securing a hard-fought victory against the Mariners, with a final score of 73-64.

St. Thomas found their rhythm in the first quarter of the game, outscoring the Mariners 15-10. Leading the charge was Brooke Bogatz, who displayed an exceptional all-around game. Bogatz scored eight points in the first quarter alone, contributing to her total of 22 points. Bogatz currently leads the Bobcats with 244 points this season. Throughout the game, Bogatz continued to be a powerhouse for the Bobcats, shooting 50% from the field, 50% from beyond the arc. 

The Bobcats continued their momentum into quarter two, putting 19 more points on the board in their favor, once again outscoring the Mariners. Bria Brown made her mark on the court, scoring nine points in the second quarter, contributing to her 12 total points in the match up. Brown currently is the Bobcats second-leading scorer this season with 142 points. Sophie Vandyke also made her presence known, notching four points in the second quarter and three rebounds, adding to her tally of eight total points and rebounds. The Bobcats entered the intermission leading the Mariners 34-26.

St. Thomas continued to lead into the second half. Paige McDonald put up six points in the third quarter, contributing to her total of nine points in the game. McDonald is following closely behind Brown in scoring, scoring 139 points in her sophomore season.

The Bobcats closed the game on a high note, Bogatz notching eight more points in the final quarter of the game. St. Thomas capitalized on Coastal Georgia's turnovers, accumulating 27 points in this category. Additionally, the team's bench proved to be a significant asset, contributing 25 points and showcasing the depth of talent on the roster. The Bobcats ultimately defeated the Mariners, 73-64. This win brings the Bobcats record to 11-3 as they continue into Sun Conference play.

Up next, the Bobcats will face Florida Memorial University at home on Wednesday, January 10th at 5:30 p.m.
