MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (October 1, 2024) - The (RV) St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Soccer team will travel to Miami, Fla. for another Battle of Miami Gardens. The Florida Memorial University Lions will host the Bobcats for the first time this season at Orange Bowl Field.
The Bobcats will enter the match up with an overall record of 4-1-3 and a Sun Conference record of 2-1-1, recently falling to Keiser University and tying Ave Maria University. The Lions will enter the match up with an overall record of 5-3 and a conference record of 2-2. Florida Memorial also fell to Keiser last week, with a score of 0-5. The Lions defeated New College of Florida on Monday, 3-2.
In their last meeting, the Bobcats defeated the Lions 2-1. The Lions took the lead first, with a goal in the 33rd minute of the match up. The Bobcats managed to mount a comeback in the last 10 minutes of the game, with an equalizer goal from Gabi Cimino in the 82nd minute.
Megan Velazquez secured the win for STU with another goal in the 85th minute, bringing the score to 2-1 in favor of the Bobcats. This win marked the 20th straight win for the Bobcats over the Lions, bringing their overall series record to 20-1.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
- Carolina de Vega showcased her skills against Ave Maria University, scoring the equalizer goal for the Bobcats. De Vega played the full 90 minutes in the match up, and also picked up a shot in the Saturday match up against the Seahawks.
- Megan Velazquez and Gabi Cimino have proved yet again to be a dynamic duo on the front lines. In their last match up against the Lions, they each picked up a goal and an assist.
- Skylar Monroe has also played an integral role in the Bobcats defense, recording 180 minutes in the last two match ups. Monroe has also picked up two assists this season, one against Judson University and the second against Webber International University.
The Battle of Miami Gardens 2.0 will take place on Saturday, October 5th at 7 p.m. at Orange Bowl Field in Miami, Fla.
