Women's Basketball Prepares for Big Week on the Road

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (February 13, 2024) - The St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Basketball team is set to hit the road this week for two Sun Conference Match ups. The Bobcats will first head to Lakeland, Fla. to rematch against Southeastern University before traveling to Ave Maria, Fla. To face Ave Maria University

In their last meeting, St. Thomas fell to Southeastern 60-71. Marta Franco led the charge for the Bobcats will 15 points and seven assists. Sophie Vandyke followed suit, recording a double-double game with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Bobcats and the Fire are currently tied for first in the Sun Conference, both teams boasting a conference record of 8-2. St. Thomas maintains the best overall record in the conference of 18-5, while Southeastern is currently 17-6. Last week, the Fire fell to Keiser University 74-82, splitting the series. The Bobcats last defeated the Fire in February 2023 on the road, 92-84.  This meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 14th at 5:30 p.m. in Lakeland, Fla.

Following their rematch against the Fire, the Bobcats will continue their road play in Ave Maria, Fla. against the Gyrenes. In their last match up, St. Thomas defeated Ave Maria 59-44 in the Fernandez Family Center. Brooke Bogatz led the team in scoring against the Gyrenes, putting up 20 points and earning herself a double-double with 12 rebounds. Bria Brown also added 10 points to the scoreboard. The Gyrenes are currently sitting at third in the Sun Conference with a conference record of 7-3 and an overall record of 16-8. Ave Maria is one of two teams to have defeated Southeastern this season, beating them in their conference opener 66-53. The Bobcats will face the Gyrenes on Saturday, February 17th at 2 p.m.

PLAYERS TO WATCH 

  • Paige McDonald is currently leading the Sun Conference in blocking with 46 blocks this season, averaging 2.0 per game. McDonald is also second in the conference in field goal percentage, shooting .505. McDonald is also the second-leading scorer for the Bobcats with 245 points.  

  • Sophie Vandyke is just behind McDonald in the Sun Conference in Blocks with 40. Vandyke is also fifth in the conference in total rebounds with 162. She has recorded four double doubles this season and was one rebound shy of notching her fifth in the Bobcats most recent game against Warner University

  • Brooke Bogatz is two assists away from 100 assists in a season. She leads the Sun Conference in total assists with 98, averaging 4.3 per game. Bogatz is number one in the conference in total field goals made with 132. She also leads the team and is second in the conference in total points with 357.
