LAKELAND, Fla. (March 16, 2024) - The St. Thomas University (STU) Softball team faced off against Southeastern University for their second day of conference play on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats went 1-1 against the Fire after two hard fought games, bringing their record to 19-2 overall and 2-1 in Sun Conference play.
Game #2:
In game two of the three game series, the Fire held the lead until the very last inning. It was St. Thomas who ultimately secured the win in an intense eight-inning battle. Southeastern wasted no time taking the lead, with early runs in the first and second innings putting St. Thomas on the back foot. Despite trailing early on, the Bobcats rallied in the third inning, with Natalie Kopicova's timely single driving in Mya Achenbach.
As the innings progressed, the Bobcats continued to chip away at Southeastern's lead. Kylie Casanova's crucial single in the seventh inning drove in Kaitlynn Martinez, leveling the score. Achenbach delivered a clutch hit in the same inning, bringing home Yarializ Maldonado and tying the game at 3-3.
The momentum firmly in their favor, St. Thomas seized the opportunity to clinch victory in the eighth inning. Destiny Falquez capitalized on a throwing error by Southeastern's third baseman, allowing Kopicova to score the winning run, securing a hard-fought 4-3 triumph for St. Thomas. The Bobcats' offensive efforts were led by standout performances from Achenbach and Kopicova, who contributed three hits and one RBI each. Pitcher Melody Vizcaino secured her eighth win of the season, pitching a complete.
Game #3:
The Bobcats took the field for their second match up of the day, holding a 2-0 lead over the Fire. The Fire took the lead early in the match. With runners on first and second, Southeastern's Brooks took her chance on a bunt, earning a single and sending a runner home.
Gabriella Gilbert managed to get on base in the second inning after a hit to right field put her on second base. Despite their efforts, St. Thomas was unable to equalize. The Fire held onto their 1-0 lead to the game's end, winning against the Bobcats.
St. Thomas finishes the series on top, 2-1. Their success in this series brings their record to 19-2 overall and 2-1 in Sun Conference play. Up next, the Bobcats will head home after a long stint on the road to host Warner University in a three-game series. The Bobcats' first game against the Royals will take place on Friday, March 22nd at 6 p.m. On Saturday, March 23rd St. Thomas will host a doubleheader against Warner, with games at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
