MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (April 16, 2024) - The #19 St. Thomas University (STU) Softball team faced off against Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday evening for a non-conference doubleheader. The Bobcats went 1-1 against the Eagles, bringing their overall record to 32-5.
Game 1: St. Thomas 0, Fort Lauderdale 3
In the first match up of the evening, the Bobcats fell to Fort Lauderdale with a final score of 3-0. The game remained scoreless until the fifth inning when Fort Lauderdale managed to score two runs thanks to a single by Fort Lauderdale's Alyssa Dragovich, bringing in Katie Adkins and Kaitlyn Nieves. In the sixth inning, Fort Lauderdale added another run when Nieves singled, bringing in Makenzie Heaton.
Game 2: St. Thomas 7, Fort Lauderdale 0
In the second, St. Thomas emerged victorious over Fort Lauderdale with a final score of 7-0. In the second inning, St. Thomas capitalized on an error by the first baseman, allowing
Bianca Palacios to score. Then,
Jade Fayad's fly out brought in another run, with
Alahnis Berrios scoring. In inning three, the Bobcats extended their lead when Palacios singled and advanced to third on an error by the center fielder, allowing
Natalie Kopicova to score. The fourth inning saw the Bobcats adding three more runs, with
Mya Achenbach's triple bringing in two runs and Kaitlyn Martinez's double driving in another run. In the fifth inning,
Alahnis Berrios doubled to bring in
Gabriella Gilbert, extending St. Thomas's lead to 7-0. On the defensive side, St. Thomas held Fort Lauderdale scoreless, with pitcher
Jasmin Fontela leading the charge for the team. Fontela pitched three innings, allowing two hits and no runs while striking out one batter.

Up next, the Bobcats will hit the road to face off against Webber International University on April 19th and 20th. The three game series will start at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 19th.
