Bobcats Fall to Coastal Georgia in Regular Season Championship

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (April 26, 2024) - The #19 St. Thomas University (STU) Softball team participated in their regular season series on Thursday and Friday against the #22 College of Coastal Georgia. The Bobcats won the first game of the series on Thursday afternoon, but ultimately fell to the Mariners in two close match ups, finishing as Sun Conference regular season runners-up.

Game One: St. Thomas 3, Coastal Georgia 0

The Bobcats started out game one hot, scoring in the first inning of the game. Bianca Palacios doubled up the middle, advancing Natalie Kopicova to third, and bringing home Mya Achenbach. Palacios kept the heat through the game, singling through the right side to bring home Jade Fayad, putting the Bobcats up 2-0 in the bottom of the 4th. Anna Toon followed suit, advancing Palacios and bringing in Kopicova to put the Bobcats up 3-0. St. Thomas held the Mariners to no runs in the meeting, defeating them with a final score of 3-0. Toon pitched a shutout for the Bobcats, allowing only five hits over seven innings while striking out three batters.

Game Two: St. Thomas 1, Coastal Georgia 3

The Bobcats kicked off game two with the same heat, with Achenbach hitting a home run in the bottom of the 1st, giving Bobcats an early 1-0 lead. The Mariners responded with a two-run homer in the top of the 2nd. They secured the win with a third run in the top of the 7th. Coastal Georgia emerged victorious over St. Thomas with a final score of 3-1.

Game Three: St. Thomas 0, Coastal Georgia 1

In game three, the game was scoreless until the top of the 3rd inning. Coastal Georgia scored their lone run in the 3rd when Rhodes singled to right field, bringing Haggerty home. The Mariners managed to hold the Bobcats to no runs, securing their second win against St. Thomas, this time with a narrow 1-0 victory. Although she finished with a loss Toon had a successful outing, going the distance and giving up just one run on three hits with five strikeouts.

The Bobcats close out regular season play with an overall record of 35-10 and a Sun Conference record of 14-7. Up next, the team will head to Clearwater, Fla. to participate in the Sun Conference Tournament.
