MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (April 6, 2024) - The (RV) St. Thomas University (STU) Softball team faced off against Keiser University on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon for a three-game series in Sun Conference play. The Bobcats won took the series against the Seahawks, defeating them 2-1 in the series, bringing their record to 26-4 overall and 9-3 in Sun Conference play.
Game 1: St. Thomas 4, Keiser 3
In the first game of the series, the game started off scoreless until the third inning, when
Anna Toon hit a double, bring home
Mya Achenbach to put the Bobcats on the board. Then the bottom of the 4th Inning, St. Thomas extended their lead with
Alahnis Berrios reaching first on a fielder's choice to the pitcher, allowing
Gabriella Gilbert to score. Gilbert had a standout performance with three hits against the Seahawks including a double, and scoring a run against the Seahawks. The Bobcats didn't stop there, adding two more runs in the bottom of the 6th.
Alahnis Berrios earned her second RBI with a ground ball to shortstop, bringing home
Yarializ Maldonado to put the Bobcats up 3-0. Kaitlyn Martinez followed suit, hitting a triple, bringing home
Natalie Kopicova to go up 4-0 against the Seahawks. The Seahawks were unable to score until the top of the 7th inning, where they attempted to mount a comeback against the Bobcats. But St. Thomas held them to three runs, securing the win, 4-3.
Anna Toon pitched six innings, allowing three runs on five hits, with four strikeouts, earning the win.
Melody Vizcaino pitched one inning in relief, earning the save.
Game 2: St. Thomas 2, Keiser 0:
The Bobcats earned a shutout victory over the Seahawks in game two of the series. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth, when the
Natalie Kopicova and
Gabriella Gilbert put the Bobcats on the board. Kopicova singled to left field, allowing Gilbert to score, putting the Bobcats in the lead. In the 5th Inning, St. Thomas scored another run when
Destiny Falquez reached first on an error by the shortstop, allowing
Yarializ Maldonado to score, putting the Bobcats up 2-0 against the Seahawks.
Melody Vizcaino earned the win for this game pitching five innings, allowing three hits and no earned runs while striking out two.
Anna Toon pitched two innings in relief, allowing one hit and no runs while striking out three batters and earning the save.
Game 3: St. Thomas 3, Keiser 6:
The Bobcats took an early lead in game three of the series against the Seahawks, with homer from Toon going over the right field fence. Toon's home run brought home
Isabella Fernandez, putting the Bobcats up 2-0 in the bottom of the 1st inning. The Bobcats held the lead for majority of the game, extending it in the bottom of the 5th inning when
Bianca Palacios singled to right field, bringing home Fernandez who earned her second run of the game. In the 6th Inning, Keiser started their comeback, bringing in two runs to tie up the game. They continued to fight back, taking the lead and scoring four runs in the top of the 7th inning. The Bobcats were unable to make a comeback, falling to the Seahawks 6-3. Vizcaino took her first loss of the season, bringing her record to 10-1.
