#19 Volleyball Fends Off Benedictine And #22 Valley City To End Season-Opening Weekend Undefeated

West Palm Beach, Fla. – Concluding their gauntlet to start the season that featured two nationally-ranked teams and three program receiving votes on Saturday, the 19th-ranked St. Thomas volleyball team outlasted Benedictine Mesa in their first match of the day 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 27-25, 26-24) before winning back-to-back sets to cap off a 3-2 victory (25-17, 20-25, 20-25, 25-15, 15-3) over 22nd-ranked Valley City State to improve to 5-0 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):  

  • Set 1 –Holding a 16-15 lead in an opening set that saw neither side hold a lead greater than three over the opening 31 points, the Bobcats scored seven-straight points to boast a 23-15 advantage. Benedictine cut into the deficit behind back-to-back points before St. Thomas forced set point, with the Bobcats' taking the opener 25-19. 

  • Set 2 – Benedictine used an early 5-0 run in the second set to pull ahead 7-3 and kept the lead for the duration of the stanza. 

  • Set 3 – After trading the opening 46 points of the third set that featured 13 tied scores, Benedictine forced set point at 24-23. The Bobcats flipped the one-point advantage to force set point at 25-24, scoring back-to-back points following a Benedictine score to take a 2-1 overall lead. 

  • Set 4 – Trailing midway through the fourth set 15-13, the Bobcats used a 7-0 run to take a 20-15 advantage. The Redhawks rallied to get within one at 21-20, knotting the score at 22- all before a pair of STU points sandwiching a Benedictine point to give St. Thomas match point at 24-23. The Bobcats countered a Benedictine point the evened the score with back-to-back points to end the match. 

 
NOTEWORTHY (GAME 1): 

  • Tayla Barnes powered the offense behind 14 kills while adding five digs and one assisted block. 

  • Alexandra Bruno chipped in 13 kills, eight digs, three assisted blocks and one solo block. 

  • Payton Bertke dished out 40 assists with 11 digs for her first double-double of the year. 


INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (GAME 1): 

  • STU finished the match with 53 kills on a .233 hitting percentage versus 56 kills on a .200 clip for the Redhawks. 

  • St. Thomas served nine aces while Benedictine recorded five. 

  • The Bobcats boasted three solo block with 10 assisted, Benedictine tallied one solo and 16assisted. 

  • The Bobcats held a 70-67 advantage in digs. 


HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):  

  • Set 1 – St. Thomas scored the opening three points of the contest and never trailed in the opening set, holding Valley City without a run greater than two the entire stanza. 

  • Set 2 –STU responded to an early 4-0 Valley City run that pushed them ahead 10-7 with a 5-2 stretch to knot the score at 12-all. The Vikings broke the stalemate behind back-to-back points and held onto the lead for the rest of the frame. 

  • Set 3 – After splitting the opening 26 points of the third set, Valley City used back-to-back points to take a 15-13 advantage. The Vikings held St. Thomas without a run greater than three for the rest of the frame to take a 2-1 overall lead. 

  • Set 4 – STU jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and never trailedd in the fourth set, creating a double-digit advantage at 18-8. 

  • Set 5 – Trailing midway through the deciding set 8-6, the Bobcats used a 4-0 rally too flip the two-point advantage at 10-8. St. Thomas forced match point at 14-10 behind a 3-0 run, ending Valley City's rally after three-straight points made it a one-point game at 14-13. 


NOTEWORTHY (GAME 2): 

  • Sana Dennis boasted 17 kills on a .708 hitting percentage. 

  • Bruno recorded a double-double behind 15 digs and 14 kills while adding three aces, one solo block and one assisted block. 

  • Barnes addedd 11 kills and five assisted blocks. 

  • Grassi anchored the defense behind 33 digs. 

  • Bertke dished out 54 assists. 


INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (GAME 2): 

  • STU finished the match with 69 kills on a .227 hitting percentage versus 54 kills on a .198 clip for the Vikings. 

  • Both sides served seven aces. 

  • The Bobcats tallied one solo block and 12 assisted while Valley City had two solo and 18assisted. 

  • St. Thomas held a 76-69 advantage in digs.
