AVE MARIA, FL (JANUARY 18, 2025) - The St. Thomas men's basketball team fell on the road to the Ave Maria University Gyrenes on Saturday afternoon.
Despite a valiant effort from senior forward Daniel Ogoro, who led the way with 24 points and 11 rebounds, the Bobcats couldn't overcome their shooting struggles.
Ogoro's 10-19 shooting performance kept St. Thomas in the game, but the team struggled from beyond the arc, hitting just 8 of 28 three-pointers (28.6%). Junior Esteban Lluberes added 17 points, making 5 of 13 field goals, including 2 of 7 from three-point range, and contributing with 3 assists.
Despite good performances from other starters like senior Dalon Dean (6 points) and junior Noah Tovar (11 points), the Bobcats could not recover after a slow start. Tovar, who also grabbed 7 rebounds, battled throughout the game, but Ave Maria's defense proved too much, limiting St. Thomas's offensive flow.
Ave Maria capitalized on St. Thomas's struggles by tightening their defense and forcing the Bobcats into 7 turnovers, mainly though steals, with the Gyrenes taking advantage of the fast-break opportunities.
The team's overall shooting performance of 27-67 (40.3%) from the field and 14-16 from the free-throw line (87.5%) were solid, but their 3 point shooting woes were a key factor in the box score.
The men are back in action on Wednesday, January 22nd, as they host New College of Florida.
Tip off is slated for 7PM at the Fernandez Family Center.
