History MADE! Men's Volleyball Wins Program's First Match In Five-Set Thriller

Parkville, Mo. – One day removed from making history with their inaugural match, the St. Thomas University Men's Volleyball made history again on Friday afternoon with the program's first victory in a 3-2 (25-20, 23-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-12) triumph over Jamestown University. 
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Set 1 – STU scored the opening point of the match and never trailed in the opening set, fending off a Jamestown rally that knotted the score at 18-all with six-straight points to force set point. 

  • Set 2 – Trailing late in the second set 23-21, the Jimmies scored four-straight points to tie the overall match. 

  • Set 3 – After trading the opening 16 points of the third set, STU broke the stalemate behind back-to-back points and maintained the lead for the duration of the stanza. 

  • Set 4 – Facing set point at 24-18, the Bobcats rallied to make it a one-point game behind a 5-0 rally before aa Jimmies' point forced a fifth set. 

  • Set 5 – The Bobcats jumped out to an 8-5 lead midway through the deciding frame, only for a pair of 3-0 spurts from Jamestown sandwiching a pair of STU points pushing the Jimmies to an 11-10 edge. St. Thomas evened the score with the ensuing point, responding to a Jamestown tally with four-straight to end the match. 

 
NOTEWORTHY: 

  • Kaelen Ingram set the program's single-game bar behind 24 kills on a .629 hitting percentage. 

  •  Gabriel Negrao chipped in 19 kills on top of three service aces and three assisted blocks. 

  • Matheus Collares established the program's single-game records for assists with 56 and digs with nine. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: 

  • STU finished the match with 62 kills on a .351 hitting percentage versus 59 kills on a .295 clip for the Jimmies. 

  • Both sides served nine aces. 

  • The Bobcats logged five solo block and eight assisted, JU recorded three solo and three assisted. 

  • STU held an 33-25 advantage in digs.

The Bobcats conclude play in the Pirate Invitational tonight against Central Christian College with first serve slated for 7:00 pm Eastern Time.
