Women's Basketball Splits At UHSP Tip-Off Classic

St. Louis, Mo. – Hitting the road for the first time this season for the UHSP Tip-Off Classic, the St. Thomas University Women's Basketball Team dropped a 92-78 decision to sixth-ranked Freed-Hardeman on Friday evening before fending off Mission University 75-71 for a weekend split.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1): 

  • The Bobcats went toe-to-toe with their top-10 opposition during the first quarter, shooting an identical 7-13 from the field for a 22-21 score after 10 minutes in favor of Freed-Hardeman. 

  • FHU started the second quarter with a 9-0 run to create a double-digit advantage and kept the lead above seven for the rest of the contest. 

NOTEWORTHY (GAME 1): 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (GAME 1): 

  • STU went 25-57 from the field, 8-20 from three-point range and 20-28 from the free throw line. Freed-Hardeman shot 35-57, 8-18 from distance and 14-16 from the free throw line. 

  • FHU held a 31-27 advantage in rebounds. 

  • The Bobcats forced 11 turnovers, resulting in 13 points. Freed-Hardman forced 13 turnovers, leading to 13 points. 

  • St. Thomas recorded seven steals and one block versus five steals and one block. 

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2): 

  • Fueled by 9-14 shooting with five from beyond the arc, the Bobcats quickly created a 27-8 advantage heading into the second quarter. 

  • The Bobcats scored the opening basket of the second quarter to extend their advantage and led by as many as 22 before a Mission rally got them within seven at 41-34 with 1:41 remaining in the half. The Bobcats connected on a pair of free throws before the quarter ended to hold a 43-34 lead at halftime. 

  • STU recreated their double-digit lead off a layup to start the third quarter, only for an 18-1 Mission spree flipping the advantage with a 52-46 score. Rallying to make it a one-possession game in the final minute of the quarter at 56-54, the Bobcats ended the frame with the final three points to pull ahead 57-56. 

  • Mission started the scoring in the final quarter to flip the one-point lead, extending it to three at 52-59 before an 8-0 STU run made it 67-62. 

NOTEWORTHY (GAME 1): 

  • Jaliyah Weekes sparked the Bobcats on both ends of the court behind 20 points on 6-10 shooting, seven rebounds and five steals. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (GAME 1): 

  • STU went 23-64 from the field,7-26 from three-point range and 22-28 from the free throw line. Mission shot 23-51, 10-27 from distance and 15-21 from the free throw line. 

  • The Bobcats held a 37-34 advantage in rebounds. 

  • The Bobcats forced 18 turnovers, resulting in 18 points. Mission forced 11 turnovers, leading to seven points. 

  • St. Thomas recorded 13 steals versus eight steals and one block.
