Women's Basketball Drops 63-59 Contest At Southeastern

Lakeland, Fla. – Heading into the final 10 minutes of Friday evening's Sun Conference contest trailing by one, the St. Thomas University Women's Basketball team rallied to take a four-point lead midway through the fourth quarter at Southeastern before the host flipped the advantage and held on for a 63-59 decision.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Neither side converted on back-to-back baskets for the entire first quarter until a jumper and tripe consecutively for the Bobcats pushed them to a 15-11 lead with 1:24 remaining in the first frame. SEU scored the final basket of the stanza to make it 15-13. 

  • Southeastern evened the score with the initial basket of the second quarter, taking the lead off the ensuing basket. The Fire held the lead for the rest of the half, extending their advantage to seven at 30-23 before a Bobcats basket with six seconds left made it 30-25 at the break. 

  • The Bobcats used a 10-5 start to the second half to knot the score at 35-all, taking a two-point lead at 42-40 only for an 8-0 run by the host pushing them ahead 48-42. STU ended the quarter with the final five points to make it 48-47. 

  • STU countered a 5-0 start to the fourth quarter by the Fire with 10-straight points to boast a 57-53 lead. Southeastern reclaimed the lead behind six-straight points and kept the advantage for the rest of the contest.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: 

  • STU went 24-58 from the field, 5-14 from beyond the arc and 6-12 from the free throw line. Southeastern went 23-52, 6-19 from three-point range and 11-14 from the free throw line. 

  • St. Thomas held a 35-30 advantage in rebounds. 

  • The Bobcats forced 17 turnovers, resulting in 12 points. The host scored 15 points off 19 turnovers. 

  • STU recorded five steals and one block versus eight steals and one block for the Fire.
