Women's Basketball Rallies For 57-56 Victory At Brewton-Parker

Mount Vernon, Ga. – Facing a double-digit deficit midway through the third quarter of Thursday's contest, the St. Thomas University Women's Basketball team rallied to prevail over host Brewton-Parker College 57-56. 
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • After splitting the initial 14 points of the contest, the host scored eight of the ensuing 10 points to hold a 15-9 lead over the Bobcats at the end of the first quarter. 

  • BPC opened the second quarter with the initial basket, responding to a pair of Bobcats' free throws with back-to-back baskets to create a double-digit separation at 21-11 with 8:02 remaining in the half. Extending their lead to 11 at 24-13, St. Thomas rallied to make it a one-possession game at 26-23 before a 5-0 run by Brewton-Parker to end the half recreated their double-digit lead at 33-23. 

  • Brewton Parker carried their run into the second half, scoring the opening seven points to create a 40-23 score with 7:56 remaining in the quarter. The Bobcats ended the run with three-straight points, holding the host without a run of consecutive points for the rest of the quarter to go into the final 10 minutes down 48-41. 

  • The Bobcats made it a one-point game behind a 6-0 start to the final 10 minutes, taking the lead at 55-53 with 4:47 left to play. STU extending their lead with a layup while a Brewton-Parker triple in the final minute created the final score. 

NOTEWORTHY: 

  • Jaliyah Weekes led the offense behind 17 points, adding 11 rebounds for a double-double. 

  
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: 

  • STU went 16-57 from the field, 1-17 from beyond the arc and 24-32 from the free throw line. BPC went 21-72, 7-30from three-point range and 7-16 from the free throw line. 

  • The host held a 48-40 advantage in rebounds. 

  • The Bobcats forced 25 turnovers, resulting in 24 points. Brewton Parker scored 16 points off 24 turnovers. 

  • STU recorded 14 steals and seven blocks versus six steals and two blocks for the host.
