Bobcats Secure the Victory in Last Regular-Season Match Up

SARASOTA, Fla. (February 22, 2025) - The St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Basketball team concluded regular season play on Saturday afternoon at New College of Florida, defeating the Mighty Banyans 59-54 in the match up.  The Bobcats, led by a dominant performance from Joey Delancy, built an early lead and held off a furious second-half comeback to secure the victory, finishing the regular season with a Sun Conference record of 12-4 and securing the third seed in tournament play.

The Bobcats came out firing, establishing a 20-13 lead in the first quarter. Delancy recorded five points for STU while Maddie Scharrenberg added four. By halftime, St. Thomas had stretched their advantage to 38-22, fueled by their strong perimeter shooting (8-for-13 from deep in the first half). Delancy picked up an impressive 12 points in the second quarter and Sophie Vandyke added another four to the tally.

After the break, New College came storming back behind a 19-point third period. The Mighty Banyans held the Bobcats to only nine points in quarter three. New College once again outscored St. Thomas in the final quarter, but it was not enough to take the lead. Delancy, Scharrenberg and Jaliyah Weekes each put up four points to secure the victory, 59-54. Delancy put together a stellar performance, finishing with 21 points on an efficient 7-of-8 shooting, including 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. She also controlled the glass, pulling down 14 rebounds to complete a double-double effort. Scharrenberg, Vandyke, and Weekes each added eight points to the tally, helping the Bobcats notch another win.

Up next, St. Thomas will return home to host Warner University on Tuesday, February 25th at 7 p.m. in the Fernandez Family Center in the first round of Sun Conference Tournament play.
