Men's Volleyball Withstands Tornadoes In 3-1 Victory

Miami Gardens, Fla. - Matheus Collares brought the shake behind 50 assists while Kaelen Ingram and Gabriel Negrao provided the bake behind 17 kills apiece to power the 12t-ranked St. Thomas Men's Volleyball Team to a 3-11 (25-17, 27-29, 25-15, 25-13) victory over Talladega College.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Set 1 – After splitting the opening 14 points of the contest STU scored back-to-back and kept the lead for the rest of the first set, using a 4-0 midway through the frame to boast an 18-12 advantage. 

  • Set 2 – The Bobcats overcame a late 23-22 deficit behind back-to-back points to force set point, with Talladega fending off two set points before ending the second set on their second set point. 

  • Set 3 – STU scored the initial five points of the third set and never trailed in the stanza, creating a double-digit lead with the final point of the frame. 

  • Set 4 – The Bobcats scored six-straight points after trading scores to start the fourth set and never trailed, extending their lead to double digits at 21-11. 

 
NOTEWORTHY: 

  • Reigning National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Setter of the Week Collares dished 50 assists on top of 12 digs. 

  • Ingram boasted 17 kills on a .323 hitting percentage with our service aces 

  • Negrao added 17 kills and two service aces. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: 

  • STU finished the match with 56 kills on a .265 hitting percentage versus 32 kills on a .111 clip for the Tornadoes. 

  • St. Thomas served 10 aces versus four for Talladega. 

  • The Bobcats logged two solo blocks and eight assisted, Talladega recorded four solo and 12 assisted. 

  • STU held a 44-25 advantage in digs.
