#16 Softball Picks Up Two More Wins Over Conquistadors

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (April 12, 2025) - The #16 St. Thomas University (STU) Softball team celebrated their seniors on Saturday afternoon and picked up two more victories over Florida National University. These two victories put the Bobcats at 40 wins for the season, bringing their record to 40-4 overall this season.

Game One: St. Thomas 8, Florida National 6:
  • St. Thomas started the game off strong, with their first run in the bottom of the first. Natalie Kopicova stole second, creating commotion on the field that led to Mya Achenbach stealing home to put the Bobcats on the board.
  • The Bobcats had a great second inning, starting with a single from Achenbach that advanced Alahnis Berrios and brought Jenna Donovan home. Achenbach later stole third, while Berrios stole home to put St. Thomas up 3-0.
  • Achenbach then scored on a sacrifice fly from Kopicova, putting the Bobcats up 4-0.
  • Kaitlynn Martinez began her stellar performance with a solo home run over the left center fence, making the score 5-0.
  • The Bobcats kept it going in the third, picking up another run with a sacrifice fly from Donovan to send Bianca Palacios home.
  • Florida National kicked off their comeback run, scoring a run in the fourth inning, but the Bobcats quickly responded with another run from Berrios to put St. Thomas up 7-1.
  • The Conquistadors had a strong fifth inning, picking up five runs in the inning to narrow the gap to 7-6.
  • Martinez picked up yet another solo home run, her ninth of the season. Martinez currently leads the team with 55 hits and 38 RBIs this season. Her home run solidified the victory for the Bobcats, defeating the Conquistadors 8-6 in game one.
  • Martinez, Achenbach, and Sierra Anderson each picked up two hits in the first, leading the charge for the Bobcats.
  • Victoria Navarro picked up the win for this game, bringing her record to 14-0 so far this season, picking up four strikeouts in four innings pitched.
  • Alyssa Luna notched the save for this game, her first of the season, with two innings pitched.
Game Two: St. Thomas 6, Florida National 2:
  • The Conquistadors were the first on the board in game two, going up one run in the top of the second inning.
  • The Bobcats had a strong third inning, starting with Gabriella Gilbert who doubled to right center, advancing Martinez and scoring Jamiellet Rodriguez to level the score.
  • Palacios then doubled to left center, advancing Gilbert and scoring Martinez.
  • Bre'Asia Thomas then grounded out to second, but the base running continued for the Bobcats with Palacios advancing to third and Gilbert scoring to put St. Thomas up 3-1.
  • In the fifth, Gilbert doubled again, scoring Martinez. Palacios then tripled to right field, bringing home Gilbert.
  • Thomas later brought home Lesieli Joseph with a sacrifice fly to right field to extend the Bobcats' to 6-1.
  • The Conquistadors managed to add one more run in the top of the sixth, but it wasn't enough to take back the lead, with the Bobcats ultimately defeating them 6-2.
  • Palacios led the charge in game two with three hits and two RBIs. 
  • Johana Magaldi picked up the win for game two, her fifth win of the season, notching five strikeouts over seven innings pitched.
Up next the Bobcats will host Southeastern University in a three game series, kicking it off on Thursday, April 17th at 6 p.m.
