MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (April 2, 2025) - The #16 St. Thomas University (STU) Softball team faced off against the
University of Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday evening for a non-conference double header. The Bobcats defeated the Eagles in both meetings, the first with a walk-off in the bottom of the eighth inning, the second with a walk-off in the bottom of the second to bring their overall record to 33-4.
Game One: St. Thomas 1, Fort Lauderdale 0:
- Despite the Bobcats picking up five hits in the meeting and the Eagles notching three, the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the eighth inning.
- With Natalie Kopicova placed as a runner on second in the first extra inning, Mya Achenbach recorded a hit to the left center fence, bringing Kopicova home to earn the victory for the Bobcats.
- Alahnis Berrios, Bianca Palacios, Kaitlyn Martinez, Victoria Navarro, and Achenbach each picked up hits in the game.
- Navarro picked up the victory for this game, bringing her record to 10-0. Navarro notched six strikeouts in eight innings pitched.
Game Two: St. Thomas 2, Fort Lauderdale 1:
- University of Fort Lauderdale was the first on the board in game two with a homer over the left field fence to put the Eagles up 1-0.
- The Bobcats responded in the bottom of the sixth with a triple from Martinez hit to right field, scoring Achenbach to tie it up 1-1.
- It wasn't until the bottom of the seventh that the Bobcats secured the victory. Navarro walked, and then later advanced with Berrios' sacrifice bunt. It was Emma Encarnacion who earned the walk-off, singling through the left side, scoring Navarro to defeat the Eagles 2-1.
- Martinez led the charge in the game with two hits and a stolen base. Gabriella Gilbert also picked up a double in the game, while Sydnee Fordham picked up a stolen base.
- Christina Ortiz notched the victory, bringing her record to 1-1.
- Johana Magaldi also had a successful game in the circle, notching five strikeouts in six innings pitched.
Up next, the Bobcats will head to Lake Wales, Fla. for a three-game series against
Warner University starting on Friday, April 4th at 5 p.m.
