Bobcats Defeat Valor to Advance, but Fall Short to Grizzlies in Opening Round Finals

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (May 14, 2025) - The St. Thomas University (STU) Softball team took on day three of the NAIA Opening Round by on Wednesday afternoon, first facing off against Evangel University once more, eliminating them in a shutout victory, 4-0. The Bobcats then went on to play Georgia Gwinnett College for the second time, falling to the Grizzlies 6-1 in the final game of the round.

Game One: St. Thomas 4, Evangel 0
  • The Bobcats were hot right off the bat in game one, putting a run on the board in the first inning. Gabriella Gilbert kicked it off with a double to right center, advancing Kaitlynn Martinez to go up 1-0 over the Valor.
  • St. Thomas kept the hits flowing in the third, starting with a single from Bianca Palacios that brought home a run from Anna toon and Martinez to go up 3-0.
  • Isabella Andujar then singled down the left side, scoring Gilbert to solidify a 4-0 lead. 
  • Anna Toon earned the victory over the Valor, notching three strikeouts and picking up another shutout victory for the season.
  • The Bobcats picked up 11 hits in the game, with Martinez leading the charge with three followed by Victoria Navarro with two.
Game Two: St. Thomas 6, Georgia Gwinnett 1
  • In game two, both teams came ready to fight, but Georgia Gwinnett was the first on the board in the bottom of the first inning, scoring one run on an error.
  • The Grizzlies went on to pick up a second run in the inning, to go up 2-0.
  • The Bobcats responded in the top of the second with a homer from Isabella Andujar over the center field fence to narrow the gap 2-1.
  • St. Thomas held the Grizzlies off for a few more innings fighting to find the lead. The Grizzlies picked up four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to secure the 6-1 victory.
  • Toon and Andujar led the team with two hits apiece, contributing to the Bobcats' total of nine hits in the meeting compared to the Grizzlies' seven.
  • Navarro and Toon both had time in the circle, Navarro notching two strikeouts while Toon picked up four.
This loss marks the end of another historic season for the Bobcats who earned their first regular season championship since 2011, and earned the title of Sun Conference Tournament Champions for the second year in a row. The Bobcats finish the season with an overall record of 49-8 and a Sun Conference record of 21-3.
