Miami Gardens, Fla. - An exciting, but rainy, Homecoming Weekend for St. Thomas Athletics was capped off by a last-second goal in St. Thomas Men's Soccer's (8-3-2 Overall, 4-0-2 Sun) win over Warner (3-6-6 Overall, 0-3-2 Sun).
St. Thomas controlled possession for most of the first half, but the Royals were able to score on one of their only opportunities of the game. Luis Seminario scored on a cross in the 44th minute to give Warner the lead going into halftime.
The second half was all about Oscar Le Guillou. The graduate student from France tied the game in the 63rd minute after he controlled a long pass from Thiago Patto to beat the Royals' defender and goalkeeper. The match remained tied until the 89th minute. With around 30 seconds remaining in the game, Warner's goalkeeper, Melvin Mikey, slipped on a goal kick, and the Bobcats took possession deep in Royal's terriotry. Julien Laborde sent a cross that was headed in by Le Guillou with eight seconds remaining, giving the Bobcats the win. It was Le Guillou's team-leading seventh goal of the season, and the third time this season he has scored twice in a match this year.
Despite only putting up two goals, St. Thomas controlled the ball for almost all of the game. They took 48 shots, with fifteen of them on goal. The Bobcats allowed only five shots, and goaltender Matias Fuentes allowed a goal on Warner's only shot on goal of the game. Melvin made 13 saves for the Royals, and Warner's defenders blocked eleven shots from St. Thomas.
The Bobcats will head out of state for their final road contest of the regular season, as they will face SCAD-Savannah in Hardeeville, South Carolina. The match is set for a 7:00 pm start on Wednesday, October 21.
