Hot Bats Lead Way for Two Saturday Wins over #7 Loyola New Orleans

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -

The St. Thomas Bobcats opened their doubleheader in style Saturday, riding timely hitting and late-game power to a 7–4 victory over the Loyola Wolfpack in Game One.

St. Thomas wasted no time jumping on the scoreboard in the first inning when Erick Ballenilla launched a solo home run to center field, giving the Bobcats a 1–0 lead. Ballenilla stayed hot in the second, delivering an RBI single to right that plated Lester Martinez and moved Kueri Martinez into scoring position. The Bobcats kept the pressure on as E.dwinToribio followed with an RBI single to center, extending the lead to 3–0. Moments later, Toribio swiped second base as Ballenilla stole home to cap a four-run surge and give STU a commanding 4–0 advantage.

Loyola responded in the third inning with a rally of their own. With a double to center to drive in a run, before a hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in another. The Wolf Pack later drew a bases-loaded walk, trimming the Bobcats' lead to 4–3. The Wolf Pack completed the comeback in the sixth when they sent a solo shot to left-center field, tying the game at 4–4 and setting the stage for late-inning drama. That drama came in the top of the seventh. With two runners on, Alan Nava delivered the decisive blow — a towering three-run home run to left field that scored Daytan Biegel and Ballenilla, reclaiming the lead for St. Thomas at 7–4.

The Bobcats shut the door from there, securing the win and taking the opening game of the twin bill. Ballenill led the offensive charge with a home run, two RBIs, and an electrifying steal of home, while Nava's clutch three-run blast proved to be the difference-maker.

Game Two

The Bobcats completed the doubleheader sweep in dominant fashion, rolling past the Wolfpack 11–1 in Game Two behind an explosive second inning and relentless offensive production.

St. Thomas struck first in the opening frame when Alan Nava singled to left field, driving in Erick Ballenilla to give the Bobcats a 1–0 lead. Loyola answered in the second on a sacrifice fly that plated a run, tying the game at 1–1. The tie didn't last long. The Bobcats erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the second inning, breaking the game wide open. Ballenilla started the surge with an RBI single to score Pablo Costales. Edwin Toribio followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home a run, and Nava added another RBI single to extend the lead to 4–1.

The offensive avalanche continued as Nicholas Alonso delivered a two-run single, scoring L. Morera and Nava. Moments later, K. Martinez ripped a two-run single of his own, plating N. Alonso and Pinales Jr., capping the seven-run frame and giving St. Thomas a commanding 8–1 advantage. St. Thomas kept its foot on the gas in the fourth when Alonso launched a solo home run to left field, stretching the lead to 9–1. In the fifth, Nava added a sacrifice fly to score Toribio, and in the seventh, Luis Morera doubled to center to drive in Lester Martinez for the Bobcats' 11th run of the afternoon.

The pitching staff handled the rest, limiting Loyola to just one unearned run as St. Thomas secured the run-rule victory and the doubleheader sweep. Nava led the charge with multiple RBIs, while Alonso powered the offense with a home run and three RBIs. The balanced attack and early offensive explosion proved too much for the Wolfpack, as the Bobcats capped a strong day at the plate with an 11–1 win.
