Softball Overcomes Early Warner Runs In Doubleheader Sweep

Miami Gardens, Fla. - Despite surrendering runs in the opening inning to visiting Warner University in each outing of Saturday's Sun Conference doubleheader, the 18th-ranked St. Thomas University Softball overcame the early deficits in an 11-3 (5 innings), 9-5 sweep.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
  • A Bobcats' error in the top of the first allowed three runs to score for Warner.
  • Leading off the bottom of the second with a single, Sydnee Fordham got STU on the scoreboard off an Alahnis Berrios sacrifice fly.
  • A solo home run by Bailey LeGere in the bottom of the third made it a one-run game at 3-2.
  • Highlighted by a three-run homer from LeGere, the Bobcats took a 9-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth with Christina Ortiz, Fordham and Allison Morales all adding RBI hits.
  • Starting the scoring in the bottom of the fifth on an error, STU activated the run rule with Ortiz sending Maggie Kirk home on a single.

NOTEWORTHY (GAME 1)
  • LeGere went 3-3 with four RBI and two runs scored.
  • Fordham went 3-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
  • Ortiz went 2-2 at the plate with three RBI and one run scored while throwing a scoreless final frame for the save.
  • Melody Vizcaino threw four frames with three unearned runs of five hits while striking out four batters.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
  • Loading the bases with one out in the top of the first, the Royals scored a pair of runs off a single to take the early 2-0 lead.
  • The Bobcats capitalized on a Warner error in the bottom of the first to cut the lead in half.
  • Leading off the bottom of the second with back-to-back singles, Mya Achenbach and LeGere sent Berrios and Kirk home to flip the one-run advantage.
  • An RBI groundout for Berrios in the bottom of the third plated pinch-running Ashley Ramon to extend the Bobcats' lead to 4-2.
  • Warner scored three runs in the top of the fifth to pull ahead 5-4.
  • Getting a runner on base to start the bottom of the fifth via an error, Berrios and Kirk scored Bre'Asia Thomas and Berrios to propel STU to a 6-5 lead.
  • Home runs from Ortiz and Emma Edwards in the bottom of the sixth scored three runs for the host and extended their lead to 9-5.

NOTEWORTHY (GAME 2)
  • LeGere went 3-4 with one RBI.
  • Berrios went 3-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
  • Ortiz went 2-4 at the plate with a home run while getting the win in the circle after allowing one run off two hits in 4.1 innings with three strikeouts.
  • Kirk went 2-4 with one RBI and one run scored.
  • Edwards went 1-4 with a home run.
