St. Thomas has faced Brewton-Parker once before. Their only matchup came in the Warner Invitational, in Lake Wales, Florida, in 2021. The Bobcats won 14-4 in a scheduled 7-inning game.
Evans Repeats as NAIA Ball Pitcher of the Week
For the second consecutive week, RHP
Diego Evans won NAIA Ball Pitcher of the Week. This media award is given to one pitcher each week for the best performance around the NAIA. Last weekend against Oakland City, Evans threw 6 shutout innings, allowing just one hit and walk, while striking out 10 batters. This follows an equally impressive outing on Opening Weekend against McPherson. On the season, Evans has thrown 12 shutout innings, allowing just three hits and one walk, while striking out 22 batters. Evans currently leads the NAIA in strikeouts, with the next closest pitcher having 19 strikeouts.
Situational Hitting
One of the main storylines last weekend against Oakland City was the lack of situational hitting. With runners in scoring position, the Bobcats were 4-32 on the weekend. Also, with a runner on 3B and less than two outs, the Bobcats hit 3-13. These numbers were much better in Opening Weekend against McPherson, as the Bobcats hit .325 with runners in scoring position.
Lester Martinez (3-5) and
Eddie Novoa (3-5) have been the best Bobcat hitters with runners in scoring position so far this season.
Scouting Brewton-Parker
The Barons, led by 11th-year Head Coach Andy Larson, traveled approximately 450 miles from Mount Vernon, Georgia, to Miami Gardens. Brewton-Parker opened their season last weekend in West Palm Beach, Florida, in a four-game set against Keiser. After loosing their first two games by double digits, the Barons responded strong to even the series at 2-2. Last season, the Barons were 18-27.
Pitching was a struggle for most of the Barons' Opening Series. Over four games, they had a 10.93 ERA, walked 24 batters, allowed 44 hits, while striking out 18 batters in 28 innings. They did have some bright spots, though. Freshman RHP Jonathan Rutland limited Keiser in his first collegiate appearance, throwing 6.2 innings, allowing just two earned runs. Rutland will start game two of the series against St. Thomas.
Offensively, the Barons had a strong last two games, scoring double-digit runs in both of their wins. As a team, Brewton-Parker hit .320 last weekend, with 13 extra base hits. Fred Guzman Diaz led the Barons offensively, hitting .500 with a .643 SLG. 4 offensive qualifiers finished the weekend hitting .400 or above. Despite a slower weekend, senior outfielder Jeremi Lara is a dangerous power hitter, as he hit .358 in 2025, with 14 2B and 11 HR.
