Bobcats Split High-Scoring Doubleheader Against Brewton-Parker

Game 1

The reigning NAIA Ball Pitcher of the Week, Diego Evans, got the start for the Bobcats, but fell behind early. On the first pitch of the game, Brewton-Parker's Anthony Savarese hit a home run to right-center. The Barons would get another run in the first after Evan's pickoff to second was overthrown into center field.

The Bobcats got those runs right back and then more. The game was tied in the first inning by a Brewton-Parker error. Alan Nava hit an RBI single, and Eddie Novoa hit a two-RBI 2B also in the first inning. In the second inning, the Bobcats bats kept rolling. Nava and Novoa each had another RBI knock, as well as Freidy De La Rosa. The Bobcats led 10-2 after two innings.

In the middle innings, the Bobcats scored two more runs on a sacrifice fly, a single, and a wild pitch. Brewton-Parker tacked on two runs, including a solo home run. In the 6th inning, Erick Ballenilla had an RBI double, and Pablo Costales had an RBI single in his first collegiate at-bat.

The Bobcats knocked the Barons' starter Jonathan Rutland out of the game in 1.2 innings, tacking him for nine total runs. Evans threw five innings for the Bobcats, allowing three runs and six strikeouts in the win. Jaime Gonzalez threw two shutout innings to finish the game.

Many Bobcats had strong offensive performances. Nava had two hits and two RBI. Novoa had hits and five RBI. Two Bobcats had three-hit performances, Edwin Toribio and Luis Suarez. The Bobcats had 16 hits and four errors in their 17-4 victory, including five doubles.

Game 2

Ismael Cordoba got the start for the Bobcats in game two of the doubleheader. It was not his strongest start, as he gave up five runs (four earned) on nine hits in four innings.

Down 5-0 in the 5th inning, Toribio got the Bobcats on the board with a sacrifice fly, followed by a Nicholas Alonso RBI single and Ballenilla sacrifice fly in the 6th inning. In the 7th inning, the Barons got a run back on a wild pitch. Toribio led off the bottom of the 7th with an opposite field home run, and Lester Martinez had an RBI double. The Bobcats trailed 6-5 after seven innings.

The Barons put up a five spot in the top of the 8th inning. In the bottom half of the frame, Toribio had an RBI single, and Daytan Biegel had a two-RBI single. The Barons added another run in the 9th, leading to their 12-8 win.

Pitching struggled for the Bobcats, as they walked 10 batters while giving up 14 hits. The Bobcats also gave up 3 errors. Offensively, the back half of the game was a strong showing, with Toribio, Biegel, and Bryan Arrieta all having multi-hit games in the Bobcats 11-hit performance. The Bobcats had five extra base hits.
