Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Ave Maria

Miami Gardens, Fla.. - Fueled by six hits from Bailey LeGere on Saturday, one going over the outfield wall, the 11th ranked St. Thomas University completed a Sun Conference series sweep of Ave Maria behind a 5-4, 9-2 doubleheader.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
  • A Bobcats' error in the top of the second allowed Ave Maria to get on the scoreboard.
  • Back-to-back hits in the top of the third after leading off the frame with a single doubled the Gyrenes' lead.
  • Leading off the bottom of the third with a single, Mya Achenbach rounded the bases off a Christina Ortiz sacrifice fly before an error by the visitor and RBI double from Emma Edwards pushed the Bobcats ahead 3-2.
  • Ave capitalized on a STU error in the top of the fifth to flip the one-run lead.
  • An Edwards double in the bottom of the fifth scored Maggie Kirk and knotted the score.
  • Back-to-back doubles from Jade Fayad and Kirk in the bottom of the seventh ended the game.

NOTEWORTHY (GAME 1):
  • LeGere went 4-4 with one run scored.
  • Gianella Gomez went 2-2 with one run scored.
  • Kirk went 2-2 with one run and one RBI.
  • Edwards went 2-3 with two RBI.
  • Christina Ortiz got the win on the mound after throwing the final two innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
  • Ortiz quickly got the Bobcats on the scoreboard via a single in the bottom of the first that scored Achenbach.
  • A solo home run by Edwards to start the bottom of the second extended STU's lead to 2-0.
  • Ave scored a run in the top of the third to cut the Bobcats' lead in half.
  • Fayad pushed the Bobcats to a 3-1 lead behind a RBI groundout in the bottom of the third that scored pinch-running Ashley Ramon.
  • Leading off the bottom of the fourth with a double, Edwards scored off a Gianella Gomez single before a sacrifice fly from Sydnee Forham and RBI groundout from Achenbach scored Kirk and Ana Mendieta to create a 6-1 score.
  • The visitors used a pair of base hits to score a run in the top of the fifth.
  • An Allison Morales triple and Edwards single back-to-back made it 7-2.
  • LeGere scored herself and Ava Regoli in the bottom of the sixth with a home run.

NOTEWORTHY (GAME 2):
  • Edwards went 3-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.
  • LeGere went 2-4 with a home run.
  • Regoli went 2-2 with a run scored.
  • Melody Vizcaino got the win on the mound after throwing five innings with two runs allowed off six hits and seven strikeouts.
