MIAMI GARDENS, FLA (MARCH, 23 2016) - The St. Thomas University women's tennis team delivered a statement victory on the court, knocking off No. 8-ranked LSU Alexandria, 4-3, in a tightly contested match at home.Â
The Bobcats set the tone early by securing the doubles point, winning two of three matches. The No. 2 doubles pairing of Sachely Carerra and Sezin Akin led the charge with a dominant 6-2 victory, while Jenesie Burgos and Caterina Antonini clinched the point at No. 3 doubles with a 6-4 win. LSU Alexandria managed a 7-5 victory at the top spot, but it wasn't enough to overcome St. Thomas' strong start in doubles.Â
In singles play, the Generals responded by taking the top two courts, as Nahia Echaide and Isabella Stuurman each earned straight-set victories to give LSU Alexandria a 2-1 lead. Jenesie Burgos rose to the occasion at No. 6 singles, delivering a clutch straight-set victory, 7-5, 6-4
LSU Alexandria briefly tied the match at 3-3 with a three-set win at No. 5 singles, setting up a decisive final court.
Jenesie Burgos rose to the occasion at No. 6 singles, delivering a clutch straight-set victory, 7-5, 6-4, to seal the upset for the Bobcats, and  Sezin Akin followed with another gritty three-set triumph at No. 4 singles (6-3, 5-7, 6-2).Â
Then, Sachely Carerra clinched the match with a hard-fought three-set win at No. 3 singles (6-2, 4-6, 6-4), and Sezin Akin followed with another gritty three-set triumph at No. 4 singles (6-3, 5-7, 6-2).Â
The Bobcats will look to continue their winning ways as they travel to New Orleans to take on Xavier (LA) on Wednesday,  March 25 at 1PM.Â
