Softball Splits Doubleheader At Georgia Gwinnett, Takes Road Series

Lawrenceville, Ga.. - Fueled by two-RBI efforts from Mya Achenbach and Jade Fayad, the 12th-ranked St. Thomas University Softball Team overcame a 7-3 setback to No. 21 Georgia Gwinnett in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader with a 6-2 victory to take the three-game road series.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
  • After getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning, the Grizzlies created a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth off a four-run homer.
  • A GGC error in the top of the sixth allowed the Bobcats to score three runs.
  • A pair of singles in the bottom of the sixth extended the hosts' lead to 7-3.
  • GGC evened the score in the bottom of the second, taking the lead in the bottom of the third at 3-2.

NOTEWORTHY (GAME 1):
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
  • Loading the bases with no outs in the top of the first, STU took the early lead off a catcher's interference.
  • Achenbach doubled the Bobcats lead with a triple that scored Ana Mendieta before touching home plate alongside Ortiz on a Fayad double to make it 4-0.
  • Georgia Gwinnett made it a one-run game in the bottom of the third after scoring two runs.
  • After scoring a run on a passed ball. Achenbach sent Maggie Kirk home with a sacrifice fly to create the final score.

NOTEWORTHY (GAME 2):
  • Achenbach went 1-2 with two RBI and two runs scored.
  • Fayad went 1-4 with two RBI.
  • Mendieta went 1-2 with one run scored.
  • Ortiz went 1-3 with one run scored while getting the win in the circle after throwing 4.1 scoreless frames.

The Bobcats return to the Space Coast Games on Wednesday, Mar. 11 to take on Madonna with first pitch set for 4:45 pm.
