Georgetown, Ky. - Going up against a nationally ranked opponent for the first this season, the 16th-ranked St. Thomas University football team went into halftime holding a 24-18 lead over No. 20 Georgetown College before holding the host off the scoreboard for the entire second half of a 34-18 victory. The victory keeps STU undefeated on the season with a 3-0 record while Georgetown falls to 1-2.
Falling behind early after Georgetown scored on their opening drive, the Bobcats knotted the score using a five-play, 65-yard drive capped by a 22-yard pass from Jalen Daniels to Lamarcuse Taylor with 11:37 remaining in the first quarter. The host ended the opening 15 minutes scoring eight-unanswered points from a pair of field goals sandwiching a safety to create a 15-7 score.
Getting within one point after a nine-yard run from Daniels capped an 84-yard drive with 12:44 remaining in the half, the Bobcats countered a GC field goal with a 92-yard drive ending with a 13-yard reception for Isaiah Lopez to give St. Thomas a 21-18 lead with 1:50 left before a halftime. A Bobcats' field goal from Jay Giunta as time expired extended STU's lead to 24-18.
Pushing their lead to 27-18 late in the third quarter off the foot of Giunta, the Bobcats ended the scoring early in the fourth quarter after an 11-yard pass from Daniels to Lopez made it 34-18 with 13:03 left in the contest.
Daniels led the offense behind 308 yards and three touchdowns in the air while rushing for one score. Lopez ran for 139 with two TD receptions, while Geno Lubin caught eight passes for 108 yards.
On the defensive side, Keyon Martin led the defense with eight solo tackles and one interception. Zach Marino boasted two tackles for 19 yards lost, including a 17-yard sack, while Elijah Henry, Markeyon Moore and Vincent Burse III all added one sack.
As a team, the Bobcats produced 457 yards of offense with 308 by air and 149 on the ground versus 268 for the host with 156 passing and 112 rushing. STU forced the lone turnover of the contest via an interception, while limiting Georgetown to one sack.
The Bobcats return home to host sixth-ranked Linsey Wilson on Saturday, Sept. 19 with kickoff set for 12:00 p.m.
