Joey Martinez

Coach Joey Martinez is in his third year overall as an Assistant Coach for the St. Thomas University Bobcats, serving as STU's Pitching Coach.

Martinez began his coaching career in 2001 as an Assistant Coach and Pitching Coach for Palmetto High School in Miami.  He then went on to coach from 2002-05 as an Assistant Coach at Miami Sunset HS.  

He began his collegiate coaching career in 2006 as the Pitching Coach for NCAA Division II Dominican College (N.Y.) in 2006 where he served as Pitching Coach.  He then was hired as an Assistant Coach for St. Thomas University where he was an Assistant Coach in 2007-08 under Bobcat Sports Hall of Famer Manny Mantrana.

He returned to the South Florida High School coaching ranks in 2009 where he coached at Miami Sunset HS until 2012.  At Sunset, HS, he coached several players who went on to professional careers, most notably Michael Paez who helped Coastal Carolina win the College World Series before being drafted in the third round by the New York Mets.

From 2013-16, he was the Pitching Coach for the highly successful Gulliver Prep baseball program.  At Gulliver, he coached future professional players such as Adrian Marin (Orioles), Joe Dunand (Marlins), Ivan Palaez (Rays), and Chris Chinea (Cardinals).

As a player, Martinez began his collegiate career as a pitcher for Miami-Dade College in 1997 before transerring to the University of Miami where he was a pitcher on the 1998 team that advanced to the College World Series.  He then completed his college career at St. Thomas University as a pitcher on the 2000 NAIA World Series club.

Martinez holds a Bachelor's of Science ('00) in Sports Administration from St. Thomas University as well as a Master's ('03) from Barry University.  A Mathematics teacher at Sunset HS, Martinez and his wife Ivonne have a son Jose, age 2.
