Bruce Carrington

Entering his benchmark 20th season at St. Thomas University, Carrington holds a Professional-level certification by the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA).

As the Head Coach at St. Thomas, he has led the Bobcat men’s and women’s teams into perennial national contenders.

In 2017, Carrington was named The Sun Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year after leading the Bobcat Men's Tennis team to a tie for second place in the regular season conference standings.

With over 35 years in coaching, he has assisted players of all levels from beginners to advanced professionals. Carrington has worked with former ATP stars such as Yannick Noah (France), as well as former members of the Brazilian, French and Haitian Davis Cup teams. He has trained members of the U.S. Junior Davis Cup team and several nationally ranked junior players, including his daughter Sabaea who was ranked sixth in the nation and won the Sun Conference individual championship while a student-athlete at St. Thomas and later played on the WTA tour. Carrington though is no ordinary college tennis coach. He is a seasoned expert who has been in the center of the changing face of tennis as it has expanded its reach over past decades to include African-Americans, Hispanics and other minorities.2798

Carrington grew up with a close relationship with tennis pioneer Arthur Ashe and today is able to pass along Ashe’s legacy to today’s youth literally helping thousands of young people along the way. Carrington served for ten years as the youth program director for the Ashe-Buchholtz Tennis Center in central Miami and founded the Greater Miami Tennis Foundation/Childrens “Out of Schools” Program introducing tennis to 12 Miami inner-city schools and parks.

On the St. Thomas campus, Carrington has directed the USTA Outreach Program where he helps provide introductory tennis lessons for community youth via summer camps and after school tennis programs for local youth. The coach expects a similar commitment to “giving back” from his players and a focused balance of academics, athletics and service as the student-athletes play as Champions of Character and graduate to become Leaders for Life.
