BIOGRAPHY
Coach Breno will enter his 9th Season at STU (2017, 2019-Pres) and his second as the Head Coach of the Men's Volleyball program. Breno has been an important part in the reconstruction of the women's volleyball with Coach Whitney while establishing the men as a national championship contender.
In the men's inaugural season, the Bobcats won 25-straight games that got snapped in the NAIA National Championship Semifinals. Ended year one ranked third in the country, the Bobcats won the Appalachian Athletic Conference Regular Season and Tournament Championship while leading the country in kills per set, hitting percentage and assists per set. He mentored three All-Americans during the first season, with setter Matheus Collares setting the single-season record for assists per set with 11.90.
Coach Breno has been part of many successful years. In his first season as assistant coach in 2017, he was part of the staff that won the Sun-Conference regular season. Since then, he has won 4 regular Seasons Championships of the 6 seasons with the Bobcat shirt ( 2017, 2021, 2022, 2023)
In 2022, as the assistant Coach on Coach Whitney's staff, they finally were crowned Sun-Conference Tournament champions. Something that last happened 20 years prior. Finishing that year at the Opening Round of the national tournament with a record of 19-6
2023 season finished as the best season ever for the Bobcats. A back-to-back Regular season and Tournament championship, with Coach Breno being chosen Assistant Coach of the Year in the Sun-Conference and AVCA Southeast-Region Assistant Coach of the Year. The team reached the furthest ever in history and a record of 27-3 and 14-0 in conference play.
Heading into the 2024 campaign with a national preseason ranking for the first time in program history, the Bobcats continued to exceed expectations behind a pair of school records with the first undefeated regular season by a NAIA-sponsored sport and the first program to win four-consecutive Sun Conference Regular Season Titles. The Bobcats extended their win streak behind a pair of 3-1 victories in the Sun Conference Championship they hosted for their third-straight banner before securing their spot at the NAIA National Championship Final Site via a 3-0 sweep of Florida College inside the Fernandez Family Center. STU won both their matches in Pool Play to advance to the knockout round for the first time in program history, ending the season against eventual champion Indiana Wesleyan.
Grassi concluded her collegiate run with a fourth Sun Conference Libero of the Year along with 2,233 career digs, the most in league history. Bertke secured her second Sun Conference Setter of the Year distinction with seven Bobcats earning All-Conference honors.
