Miami Lakes, FL - Nicole Molander-Barraza scored points after point at an alarming rate totaling 22 kills for the St. Thomas University (3-9, 1-1 in SC) volleyball team in their 3-1 (24-26, 22-25, 25-19, 15-25) win over Sun Conference opponent the Northwood University Seahawks (5-9, 1-2 in SC).
The win was the Bobcats third in a row and was in front of the largest and loudest crowd to watch a home St. Thomas volleyball match of the season. The crowd did not get a chance to cheer much early for the Bobcats as they started game one a little slow. Once the Seahawks created an 11-7 lead, Bobcat coach Mauricio Diaz called a time out to regroup his players.
After the timeout the Bobcats would make one more mistake with a return error before taking over the game. Very quickly the Bobcats scored point after point matching the Seahawks points and then some to take the lead 20-14. The Bobcats seemed poised to win the first game convincingly when the Seahawks found a little energy within them and tied the game at 24. That is when Adriana Montilla stepped up as a leader elevated well above the net to send the ball crashing down on the Seahawks' side for a kill and the 25th point for the Bobcats. With the crowd still cheering Montilla's play the Seahawks would soon fail to return an attack by the Bobcats again making the final score of game one 24-26.
The start of game two was indication of how the entire game would unfold. It began with a long volley displaying great ball handling, passing and effort from both teams. The lead would change hands like the ball changed sides of the net during the opening volley going back and forth. By the time both teams reached double digits neither team took control of the game, the score was 12-12. The game featured strong play throughout yet both teams had a treat in store for the fans at the game. The best volley of the match would come with both teams tied at 22. The volley featured dive after dive, and point saving bumps well beyond the out of bounds line. The gym was roaring as the fans witnessed both teams race across the court. The home team crowd roar may have helped the Bobcats a bit more than the Seahawks and they were able to win the point and the match 22-25.
Game three was bit of a let down for the Bobcats. They started slow again allowing the Seahawks to jump out to a 5-1 lead. The Bobcats never recovered from the early deficit, every time the Bobcats brought the score within the four points they spotted the Seahawks, the Seahawks would score two or three points in a row of their own. The Bobcats would lose the game 25-19.
For the next game it appeared the Bobcats learned from their poor start in game three and pounced on the Seahawks early creating a 3-8 lead. The lead forced the Seahawks to call timeout yet the pet talk from their coach could not stop the Bobcats from putting up points as they continued to lead 5-13 forcing the Seahawks to take another timeout. This timeout proved to be a bit more effective as the Seahawks began to steal some of the momentum from the Bobcats. Fortunately for the Bobcats Molander-Barraza was still playing well and she displayed excellent leaping ability to record a solo block at the net for the Bobcats 21st point of the match. That play blocked a potential score for the Seahawks and a comeback as the Bobcats won 25-15. The

Fernanda Neves led the team to their highest hitting percentage yet at .530, she had 52 assists 5 digs and 2 blocks. Julianne Rivera had 16 digs and Haleema Linares had 4 kills and 2 blocks.
