Miami Gardens, Fla.--As reported by Jacksonville Daily News (JDN) , Omar Tejeira was named a intercollegiate medalists. In his hometown of Panama City Tejeira is use to 80 degree weather. This past weekend at the Paradise Point Golf Course aboard Camp Lejeune, the St. Thomas sophomore and teammates chased the individual title at 40th Intercollegiate Golf Tournament.
JDN reported the winds were whipping around at about 10 mph, and there was an on-again, off-again misty rain, which made it feel colder than the mid 40s. Not exactly ideal conditions to play golf. Through the bad weather, Tejeira went on shooting a 1-under 71 on the Gold Course for a 10-under 204 three-round total to capture the individual championship by 4 strokes over Greensboro's Brock Elder.
Tejeira opened the tournament with a 3-under 69 on the Gold and then a 6-under 64 on the Scarlet Course on Saturday. He was the only golfer in the 160-player field to break par in all three rounds. On Sunday, Tejeira told JDN that he decided to employ a basic game plan.“Just got to keep it in the fairway and hit greens. That's my thought,” he said. “That's about it, just hit that and stick to it and I finished with three birdies, which broke me out to 71 and made me win.”
Tejeira was one of only three golfers to break par on the tougher Gold Course. The others were his teammate, Esteban Aristizabal, who also shot a 71, and USC-Beaufort's George Thacker, who had a 69.
Given his performance in such tough conditions, Tejeira was asked by JDN whether his performance was among his best ever. “It makes me believe everything's possible, especially with these conditions,” Tejeira said. “Everybody blew it up. I was able to keep it up and win the tournament.”
