MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The St. Thomas women's volleyball team won three straight games in less than 48 hours to improve to 10-5 overall and move into second place in The Sun Conference with a 4-1 conference record. On Friday night, the Bobcats took care of cross-town rival Florida Memorial in straight sets, followed by a four-set win over Trinity College and a straight set win over Southeastern. The Trinity and Southeastern matches were played Saturday in Lakeland, Fla.
On Friday night at Florida Memorial, the Bobcats dominated play with wins of 25-21, 25-12, and 25-14 on the Lions' home court.
Taylor Allgeier led STU with 12 kills, while not committing an error in 16 total attacks. Freshman
Sydney Maynard was responsible for 17 assists to go along with six digs and four kills. Libero
Angie Ardiles had 15 digs, while freshman Felecia Gonzales contributed with a line of 9 kills, four assists, and three digs.
In Saturday's doubleheader in Lakeland, the Bobcats cruised in the first set, winning 25-13. After a 25-20 win in the second set, the Bobcats could not put the match away, giving up set three by the score of 19-25. STU would rebound with a 25-19 win in the fourth set as Allgeier scored on three consecutive kills off of three straight sets by Maynard to finish off the contest. Against Trinity, Maynard had 46 assists en route to double-digit kills by three Bobcats – Allgeier (18),
Nicole McInnis (15) and Gonzales (12).
In Saturday's finale against host Southeastern, the Bobcats did not give up a set with wins of 25-22. 27-25, and 25-22. The match, which will not be counted toward the conference standings, featured 17 tie scores and six lead changes with four of the lead changes occurring the first set. Offensivley, McInnis led the way with 17 kills as Allgeier posted 15 kills. On defense, Ardiles led with 20 digs to along with 14 digs by McInnis. Maynard once again was the match's leading setter with 35 assists.
The week began with a 3-0 road loss to NCAA Division II opponent Palm Beach Atlantic. By going 3-1 on the week, the Bobcats improved to 10-5 on the season with five regular season matches to go. St. Thomas, under new Head Coach
Callaway Mefford, has won two more games than last year's final win total of eight.
The Bobcats return to action with a Sun Conference match vs. Northwood on Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Fernandez Family Center.
