Melony Poviones tied a school record with five goals as 12th ranked St. Thomas defeated Thomas (Ga.) 6-2 in the semifinals of the Sun Conference Championships. With the win, the Bobcats improved to 15-1-1 on the season and will play the winner of the SCAD Savannah vs. Embry-Riddle match in the conference finals on Friday, Nov. 15.
Poviones scored five goals for the second time this season, matching her own school record. She also had five goals this season vs. Florida Memorial on October 19. Senior
Sara Mira is also tied for the school record for goals in a game having scored five vs. Warner (Fla.) last year.
Poviones raised her goal total to 27 on the year, leading all Sun Conference players and ranking among the elite nationally. She has scored six goals in two postseason games and scored in each of her last 11 games played.
Poviones scored her first goal on a breakaway following the opening kickoff making the score 1-0 just 25 seconds into play. She scored a second goal off a throw in by freshman
Ana Parra in the 42nd minute to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead. A goal by Jeny Hernandez of Thomas cut the lead in half less than a minute later.
Poviones and the Bobcats took over the game in the second half, outscoring the Nighthawks 4-1 in the final period to put away the game. Poviones had an assist on a goal by senior
Sara Mira in the 60th minute to make the score 3-1. The goal was the 25th of the year for Mira.
Poviones then scored on a direct kick from 25 yards to secure her third hat trick of the year and followed that with a successful penalty kick for her fourth goal of the game. Poviones then scored her fifth goal of the game with ten minutes left in regulation.
St. Thomas advances to The Sun Conference Championships finals where they will play the winner of Saturday evening's game between SCAD Savannah and Embry-Riddle. If SCAD wins, then the Bobcats will host the championship on Friday. If Embry-Riddle wins tonight, the Bobcats will travel to Daytona Beach for the finals.
