MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – St. Thomas (2-2) falls to conference foe Northwood (3-3) in a non-conference matchup at Paul Demie Mainieri Field. The night game ended with the final score of 7-6, with the Seahawks on top. Â
Jose Lazaro was able to give the Bobcats a strong start with five innings pitched, two unearned runs surrendered from three hits, one walk and four strikeouts. Also, at the plate,
Eric Santamaria led the game in hits with three and led the Bobcats in RBI with three.
Â
St. Thomas was able to gain the early lead in the game off a
Jerry Downs RBI single in the first, which scored
Adam Duarte to put the Bobcats ahead in the early goings. The Seahawks were able to respond strongly in the fourth by putting two unearned runs against Lazaro from a Keivan Berges single and a Brandon Crawford sacrifice fly. Northwood would continue their scoring in the sixth with a huge three run homerun from Berges, off of
Alex Hernandez. The Seahawks would post two more unearned runs in the seventh
Brandon Valentin from an error at first base and an error at shortstop.
Â
The Bobcats were able to pull off a major spurt of their own in the bottom of the eighth inning, as a Santamaria homer to right field scored three and shrunk the lead to three. Lefty pinch hitter,
Andrew Denis came up big for STU in the inning with a double to left that scored two and put the Bobcats down by only one late in the game.
Â
A strong relief appearance by
Tyler Checkley in the ninth, recording three straight outs, helped maintain momentum for the Bobcats heading into their last at-bats. Unfortunately, the pitching of Northwood's Weston Wuthrich proved to be too much for STU as they were not able to produce any runners in the bottom of the ninth.
Â
The Bobcats being their conference play this Friday at Paul Demie Maineri Field as they host a doubleheader against Thomas, starting at 3 p.m.
