MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – St. Thomas (3-3, TSC 1-1) Thomas University (7-3, TSC 1-1) in a Friday doubleheader at Paul Demie Mainieri. The Bobcats dropped the first game to the Nighthawks 5-6. While in the second game, STU bounced back in major way, picking up the victory over Thomas, with a 20-2 win.
In game one of the doubleheader, St. Thomas started on a strong note as they were able to tack on their first run in the third inning, off a first and third play that had
Adam Duarte get in a pickle between first and second, allowing
Oscar Rodriguez to score. In the following inning,
Michael Centeno added on to the St. Thomas lead in the fourth as he sent a ground ball single into left field to score
Cesar Ramirez and
David Quintero. Also, in the fifth
Paul Chacin had a sac fly to score
Bryan Bermudez and
Eric Santamaria singled to score
Jerry Downs to put the to five. During this time, starter
Marcos Barrios was throwing lights out baseball, allowing no runs through six innings with nine strikeouts. The seventh inning was the trouble inning for the Bobcats, as the Nighthawks hit around the lineup and scoring six runs in the process. Including Barrios, the Bobcats pitched
Alex Vierra and
Tyler Checkley, who finished the remainder of the game for STU. Vierra was given the loss for the afternoon game, while Thomas reliever, Tate Lambert was awarded the victory. Â
The Bobcats started of the second game strong as well, as they opened up the bottom half of the first inning by posting two runs from a Chacin ground ball out that scored Duarte and a Santamaria single up the middle that scored Downs. In the bottom of the next inning, the Bobcat assault would go full throttle as they would score six runs off of five hits. The big hit that inning coming from a two-run Downs homerun. The Bobcats would also score one in the fourth off a
Steven Fischer RBI single and a resounding eight more in the fifth with the biggest hits coming from Centeno two-run RBI double and a Fischer two-run double to extend the Bobcats lead to 15 after five. STU would tack on three more runs in the sixth and the 10 run-rule would come into effect to call the game after seven.
On the mound in the second game,
Alex Perez had a great night for the Bobcats as he went five innings giving up one run off of three hits and recording five strikeouts.
Andres Hernandez,
Brandon Valentin and
Anthony Lopez also made appearances on the mound for the Bobcats in securing STU's first conference win. Â
The Bobcats wrap up the conference weekend against Thomas as they faceoff at 1 p.m. at Paul Demie Mainieri Field tomorrow afternoon.Â
