HARDEEVILLE, SC – St. Thomas (7-4, TSC 4-2) swept host South Carolina-Beaufort (11-4, TSC 3-3) in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader to secure a series conference win. The Bobcats defeated the Sharks 9-3 in the first game, followed by a come-from-behind 15-14 win in game two. Closer
Chris Rodriguez was in the second game, and earning saves in the both games off his collected 3.2 innings piched. Cesar Rarmirez, who posted six hits on the day, scored the game winning run on a sacrifice fly by
Eric Santamaria for the win in the second game as the Bobcats came back from an 11-0 deficit.
In game one of the doubleheader, STU scored first against the Sharks by posting two runs in the top of the second inning, with a
Michael Centeno two-RBI single into left that scored
Cesar Ramirez and
Brandon Canizares. The Sharks would answer back in the bottom of the inning by scoring two of their own from a two-run Zack Saldivar home run.
David Quintero would take the lead back for the Bobcats in the fourth off a one-run single to left that scored Ramirez. STU would continue to add to the lead in the seventh with a
Bryan Bermudez sacrifice fly to left that scored Quintero. The Bobcats added five more runs to the lead in the eighth and ninth with
Oscar Rodriguez,
Jerry Downs, Cainzares and Quintero all driving in runs.
For game one,
Tyler Checkley picked up his third win of the season off of three innings pitched, while only allowing three hits, three walks and no runs with one strikeout. Rodriguez would pick up the game one save after pitching 2.2 innings and surrending only one run. For the Sharks, Jamie Strock was given his second loss of the season, while surrendering four runs in his six innings pitched.
Game two of the doubleheader had the Sharks score the first run of the game as Ashly Morris homered to right center off of STU starter
Kharlin Sued. The Sharks would continue their attack in the second as they posted 10 runs off of eight hits in the inning. The Bobcats would answer back in the next half inning by dropping the Shark lead to six, with five runs of their own in the top of the third. Ramirez would lead the way with a single to score Rodriguez.
Eric Santamaria would follow with an RBI double scoring Downs and
Steven Fischer would help some more with a two-run single to wrap up the scoring in the inning.
Bobcats would continue their hot hitting to take down the Sharks by scoring six in the fourth. STU would score off of a Ramirez RBI double, Bermudez score off a passed ball, Downs RBI single and the biggest score, a
Michael Centeno three-run homerun to tie the game at 11. The Bobcats would take the lead in the fifth off a Cainzares walk, scoring Downs, but the Sharks would answer back in the botton of the inning off a Johnny Cole homerun to left. Sharks would score one in the sixth and seventh to regain the lead, but the Bobcats would tie it up again in the eighth off a two-run single from Rodriguez.
In the ninth, a lead off Ramirez double, Downs lineout and Santamaria RBI sac fly, put the Bobcats ahead by one heading into the bottom half of the last inning.
Chris Rodriguez would come in for the save and go three-up, three-down with a strikeout to pick up the save.
Alex Vierra is awarded the win for the Bobcats, as Blake Drew is given his second loss of the season.
Bobcats return home to face off against Lynn University for the second time this season. In the last game, the Fighting Knights picked up the win in a 6-7 game. Tuesday's game will start at 6 p.m. at Paul Demie Mainieri Field.
