MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – St. Thomas (0-2) dropped its season opening doubleheader to Barry University (12-5) at Buccaneer Field in Miami Shores.
In game one, Barry were the first to strike as Ashley Fernandez reached on a
Natalie Sacramento throwing error that scored Cheyanne Head. They would score again in the inning off a Megan Copeland groundout that scored Fernandez, putting the Buccaneers up by two to end the second. Barry would continue their attack in the third with a two-run Dee Espinosa homerun. Espinosa would stay constant in the fifth and homer again and extend the Barry lead to five. The Bucs would tack on three more in the sixth to put the run-rule into effect and secure the Barry victory.
For the Bobcats in game one,
Jessica Matias,
Kristen Scott,
Jamie Gonzalez and
Cristina Sacramento all recorded hits on the day.
While on the mound,
Cristina Sacramento and Carson Castasus made appearances for the Bobcats, with Sacramento charged the loss. For Barry, Taylor Sabol was awarded her third win of the season.
The second game of the doubleheader had the Bucs continue their offense against the Bobcats, as they would pick up the doubleheader sweep after scoring five runs in the fourth and three in the sixth. This would again put the run-rule into effect against STU and end the game in six innings. STU's
Amanda Furar was able to go two for two on the day with two hits, while
Christina Horton,
Natalie Sacramento,
Cristina Sacramento and
Jamie Gonzalez were all able to pick up hits in the second matchup.
Cristina Sacramento would start for the Bobcats in game two and go four innings, with Furar finishing up the remaining two. Sacramento was given the loss for STU as Kristina Pazienza picks up her third win for Barry.
The Bobcats return to action this Wednesday afternoon for an exhibition doubleheader against Miami Dade at home, with the first game starting at 1 p.m.
