MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – St. Thomas (2-1) takes down DII opponent Barry University (0-1) in a night matchup at Paul Demie Mainieri Field. The Bobcats were able to defeat the Buccaneers 9-6 in Miami Gardens.
Eric Santamaria led the hitting front for St. Thomas, going four for five on the night with one RBI and one run scored.
The Bobcats started the night off strong, tacking on six runs in the first and holding Barry to one run for six innings. The pitching for the Bobcats was led off by the start from
Alex Perez , who went four innings and only surrendering one run off of five hits with three strikeouts. The win was given to
Tyler Checkley, his first of the season, as he went two innings giving up no runs or hits, and recording one strikeout. The loss for Barry was given to their starter, Jonathan Hernandez, his first for the year.
In the later innings, Barry came back to fight, as
Alex Sarmiento came in to relieve Checkley and surrendered four runs in the top of the seventh. Fortunately,
Andres Hernandez and
Alex Vierra were able to hold the Buccaneers score to five after the run.
Santamaria's four hits was a game high on the night, as
Paul Chacin was right behind him with three hits against Barry. Chacin was also able to post 2 RBI for the night, as was
Oscar Rodriguez and
Bryan Bermudez.
The Bobcats return to action next Tuesday against Northwood University in a non-conference matchup at Paul Demie Mainieri Field, starting at 6 p.m.
