MIAMI Gardens, Fla. – The Bobcats (2-12, TSC 0-2) opened up conference play with a doubleheader against Thomas (24-7, TSC 2-0). The Bobcats challenged the #12-ranked team, but ultimately dropped both games. Game one proved to be a tight contest, but the Nighthawks escaped with the 1-0 victory. The Bobcats rallied in the second game, but Thomas again held on for the 8-4 victory.
Over the two-game series,
Kristen Scott and
Christina Horton led all Bobcat hitters with 3 hits. Another standout performer was
Amanda Furar, who finished with 2 hits and 1 RBI.
Squandered scoring opportunities contributed to a low-scoring affair in game one. The Nighthawks struck first when an RBI single from Carmen Nadal scored Alex VanWagner in the top of the first. The Bobcats best chance to answer appeared in the bottom of the fourth with Matias and Horton on second and third, respectively. However, Christina Sacramento flied to out to center, effectively ending the Bobcat scoring threat. The 1-0 score would end up being the final, as neither team was able to mount any additional runs.
Game two started off slowly until the Nighthawks displayed a strong third. Michael Cooper hit a homerun to left field, scoring both her and Alex VanWagner. The Bobcats would cut into that lead in the bottom fourth, when an RBI single scored Catasus. Catasus made an aggressive play to get home from second, but just managed to beat out the throw. The Nighthawks would add 4 runs in the top of the fifth, 1 in the top of the sixth, and 1 in the top of the seventh. The Bobcats would attempt a comeback in the bottom of the seventh. An RBI sacrifice fly by
Michelle Murch would score
Jessica Hopping. With two on second and third,
Natalie Sacramento hit a 2 RBI single to score Horton and Matias. But the threat would subside when Alexa Fair struck out
Cristina Sacramento, securing the Nighthawks 8-4 victory.
The Bobcats return to action tomorrow when they face the University of South Carolina Beaufort in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 12 P.M. E.T. at STU Softball Field.
