MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – St. Thomas (25-10) and Palm Beach Atlantic (17-12) split the two games in afternoon doubleheader at Paul Demie Mainieri Field.
Paul Chacin had the best collective day for the Bobcats, going a combined four for eight with three RBI between the two doubleheaders.
Alejandro Kan picked up his fifth win and moves to 5-0 on the season.
In game one, the Sailfish were the first to capitalize off of Bobcats errors in the top of the second inning. Two PBA hits and two STU errors led to the Sailfish scoring two runs in the inning and generating the first lead of the day. STU wouldn't be able to post their first runner of the game until the bottom of the third, when
Adam Duarte recorded a base on balls. Another two walked runners would come from
Steven Fischer and
Michael Centeno in the bottom of the fifth but would generate no more production for the Bobcats in the inning.
The first STU hit would come off the bat of
Cesar Ramirez would post a double to spark the bats in the bottom of the sixth.
Paul Chacin would capitalize off the first hit and score Ramirez off a RBI single to cut the PBA lead in half heading to the seventh.
Alejandro Kan would be placed in a bases loaded situation with no outs in the top of the eighth and surrender only one run in his strong inning of relief. Another PBA would cross in the top of the ninth to push the Sailfish lead to three. In the bottom of the ninth, Chacin and
Eric Santamaria back-to-back singles along with a
Steven Fischer walk would put the bases loaded with one out.
Brandon Canizares would send a mishandled single to left and score three runs on the hit and tie the game up at four with one out. A passed ball two batters later would send Canizares home and win the game for the Bobcats in walk-off fashion, 5-4.
Overall on game one, Kan's relief appearance would pick him up his fifth win and move him to 5-0 on the season. Eric Russell would be given the blown save and loss on the game for PBA, moving him to 2-1 on the season. Chacin had the best game one going two for four with an RBI. Canizares would be the hero in game one, being a part of all four runs that brought back the Bobcats back for the win in the ninth.
In game two, the Sailfish would score first with a huge seven-run third inning, off of five hits and three walks in the inning. The Bobcats would respond in the bottom half, with three runs of their own, as
David Quintero would tack a two-RBI single and Chacin would follow with an RBI single. The score would remain the same for the next three and half innings, moving us to the final inning. As
Brandon Valentin, came in relief, the Sailfish would post one more run to expand their lead to five and secure their first win of the series, 8-3. Overall, in the game,
Nico Hernandez and Quintero would have the best game going two for four each, and Quintero with two RBI in the game.
Bobcats stay at home this week, as they will face off against Clearwater Christian this Monday night at 6 p.m.
