BOBCATS SWEEP GYRENES; KEEP POSTSEASON HOPES ALIVE

AVE MARIA, Fla. – St. Thomas (5-19, TSC 3-9) sweeps Ave Maria (22-22, TSC 6-6) in a doubleheader at AMU Softball Field. In a game one that was suspended Saturday in the bottom of the seventh with one out, resumed Sunday and secured an 8-1 victory to start of Sunday. In the second game, the Bobcats picked up their win over the Gyrenes with a score of 5-3. Jessica Matias had the strongest series for STU, as she went a collective four for seven with four RBI and a homerun. Cristina Sacramento picked up both wins on the mound for the Bobcats in the doubleheader.

In game one, STU scored first blood from a Kristen Scott RBI single putting the Bobcats up early. But, the Bobcats strongest at-bats came in the fourth inning with the Bobcats up 2-1. A two-run homerun off the bat of Matias and a Scott of RBI groundball would tack on three more runs for the Bobcats in the game. After, Cristina Sacramento would join the homerun party with a homer of her own in the sixth. Once the game continued the next day in the seventh, STU wrapped up game one and secured the win.

In game two, the Bobcats would continue their early attacking ways, as they posted an early run in their first at-bats of the game. This time though, AMU would respond and score a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. In the third, Ave would take their first lead of the series with two runs moving the score to 3-1 in favor of the Gyrenes.

But, the never quit attitude of the Bobcats would come into full effect as STU ladies would rally in their last at-bats of the game in the bottom of the seventh. Christina Horton would lead the charge as a RBI would put the Bobcats within one. A passed ball, Matias RBI single and Cristina Sacramento RBI double put STU ahead by two runs in their seventh inning rally. This rally would secure the Bobcats game two win and lock up the sweep over AMU.

The two wins from the Bobcats keep their post season hopes alive, as the team now needs to win out in conference play to secure a spot in The Sun Conference Tournament.  The team will head to Davie on Tuesday to play a doubleheader against Nova Southeastern with the first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.
