CLERMONT, Fla. – ST. Thomas (7-22, TSC 5-11) drops their first game of The Sun Conference Tournament to #17 ranked USCB. In the 4-0 loss to the Sand Sharks,
Christina Horton had the best day at the plate, recording half of the Bobcats total hits, going two for two with a stolen base.
The game began with a pitching duel between the two starters,
Cristina Sacramento and Kristy Cook. The Sand Sharks were first to strike in the bottom of the third, as a three-run homerun from Taylor Triplett gave USCB their first lead. A huge throw home from outfielder
Jessica Matias, recorded the final out of that rally inning for the Sand Sharks and held the game at 3-0. USCB would score one more in the fifth to push their lead to four, heading to the final two innings.
The Bobcats would have their biggest inning in the sixth. They were able to place themselves in a bases-loaded situation with one out after a Horton single, Matias reaching on a fielding error and
Cristina Sacramento drawn walk. Unfortunately, STU would not be able to capitalize on the big chance and USCB would be able to hold their lead after shutting down the Bobcat rally.
After the opening round loss, the Bobcats look to bounce back in the tourney, as they are scheduled to play against the loser of the Ave Maria v Thomas (Ga.) game that takes place at 2 p.m today. The Bobcats next game is scheduled for a 9 a.m. start, tomorrow May 1, as they wait for the results of preceding games.
