MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - St. Thomas (4-3, 2-0 TSC) remained undefeated in conference play with a 2-1 win over fourth ranked Thomas University (7-2, 1-1 TSC).
Goalkeeper
Jiayi Wang came up with numerous critical saves down the stretch to preserve the upset victory including a crucial save on a penalty kick that energized the Bobcats.
The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute when
Kris Wilkinson connected with
Tony Mamodaly for a strike from just inside the box. It was Mamodaly's second goal of the 2015 season.
While the Bobcats entered the intermission with the 1-0 lead, Thomas battled back in the second half to equalize the match in the 59th minute.
Severin Abt and
Jonathon McGrath made two swift passes to connect with freshman
Connor Stanley for his first goal of his collegiate career.
With the score tied 1-1, the Nighthawks were given an opportunity to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty kick. The penalty kick was saved by Wang which sent the momentum back to the Bobcats.
Energized by Wang's save, St. Thomas connected on the game-winning goal just three minutes later as
Fabian Heinrich found
Federico Moronell for the 2-1 lead.
The Nighthawks applied their offensive pressure back onto the Bobcats over the final 17 minutes of the match. The Bobcats defense, led by Heinrich, held off the TU attack aided by several more saves by Wang.
The Bobcats return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. in a non-conference match at Florida National to be played at Goodlet Park in Hialeah, Fla. Sun Conference play for the Bobcats resumes on Wednesday, October 7 at 4 p.m. when the Bobcats host Southeastern at Bobcat Field.
