MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - The Bobcats earned their first victory of the season in thrilling fashion, with a 3-2 victory over the visiting Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies. Â Originally scheduled for the previous evening, the match was postponed to 9 A.M. due to inclement weather. Â The early morning start seemed to have no effects on the Bobcats as they raced out to an early lead. Â The Grizzlies posed a threat in the match's waning moments with a late scoring surge. Â However, after succumbing late in overtime their previous two matches, the Bobcats finally showed the ability to put an opponent away for good.
The Bobcats got on the board early when
Sharon Tejeda found
Michelle Bailey in the 5th minute for the game's first score. Â Soon afterwards, Tejeda, herself, found the back of the net when she was able to secure the ball off an errant pass from Grizzly goalkeeper, Courntey McKenzie. Â Tejeda continued to make critical plays for the Bobcats offensively. Â In the 27th minute, she notched another assist when
Ana Parra was able to hit a header off the rebound for the Bobcats third goal of the match. Â The first 35 minutes of the second half would see both teams struggle to create any opportunities. Â In the 80th minute, the Grizzlies finally got on the board when Bristol Countess scored in the box off a rebound. Â She would follow that up three minutes later when she scored outside of the box to reduce the Bobcat lead to one. Â Despite Georgia Gwinnett's run, the Bobcats were able to clamp down on defense and escape with the victory.
The Bobcats get a day of rest before strapping up for another early morning contest against Hastings College (Neb.). Â The tilt is scheduled for 9 A.M. E.T. on Monday, September 7th.
