MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - History was made on Tuesday night as the first regular-season game was played under the new lighting system at the STU Soccer Fields. Prior to the game, St. Thomas University and the Miami FC officially dedicated a new lighting system with a "turn on the lights" ceremony.
Â
The new Musco lighting system was donated by the Miami FC as part of a partnership with St. Thomas University whereby the Miami FC's training headquarters is on the STU campus. With the addition of the lights, The Miami FC now has the ability to train at night, while the St. Thomas Men's and Women's soccer teams will play and practice at night.
Â
The match was delayed 15 minutes due to a lightning delay, but once the weather cleared history was made as the Bobcats and Sharks kicked off the first regular season game to be played under the new lights.
Nova Southeastern defeated St. Thomas in the contest by the score of 1-0.
Â
The Bobcats controlled most of the action in the first half and threatened to score with three strong opportunities that just missed the back of the net.
Â
NSU's Juanes Devia scored the game's lone goal in the 53
rd minute. The Bobcats had an opportunity to tie the match with just three minutes to play as STU's
Hector Mena and
Fabian Heinrich fired back-to-back shots saved by NSU goalkeeper Jack Howard.
Â
The Bobcats return to action 6 pm this Saturday at Barry University. Â The next home match for St. Thomas is scheduled for Saturday, September 17 under the lights vs. Florida National at the STU Soccer Fields.
