MIRAMAR, Fla. - St. Thomas (10-2-1, 7-2-0 TSC) exploded in the second half to defeat host Florida Memorial (1-9, 8-0 TSC) 7-0 Wednesday evening at Vizcaya Park as The Sun Conference play reaches its final week.
The Bobcats and Lions played a scoreless first half with STU unable to find the back of the net despite a 9-2 advantage in shots. STU have shut out their opponents in eight of 13 overall matches this year and outscored opponents 44-7.
That certainly wasn't the case in the second half as STU reeled off seven consecutive goals to blow out the Lions on their home field.
Andrea Manzur opened the scoring on a free kick in the 52nd minute which was followed by a goal less than a minute later by
Sarah Lyppert Thomsson.
Ten minutes later,
Eva Castano Candela doubled the Bobcat lead with back-to-back goals off assists by
Brianna Raaf and
Nichole Maribona.
The parade of goals continued as
Kortney Hinden scored in the 61st minute with the assist going to
Alexa Leizorek.
In the 64th minute, STU extended its lead to 6-0 on a goal Raaf assisted by Manzur.
The goal scoring flurry ended the way it started with a free kick by Alexa Leizorek to give the Bobcats their seventh goal of the half.
Cristina Garwacki earned the shutout in goal for the Bobcats. Garwacki recorded six saves to preserve the shutout.
STU returns to action Saturday, October 28 at 3 p.m. with a road conference match at SCAD Savannah.
