BIG THIRD QUARTER NOT ENOUGH FOR STU IN SEASON-OPENER

Box Score BUTTE, Mont. - St. Thomas (0-1) dropped its season opener to host Montana Tech (5-0) 74-63 on Tuesday night. 

Samara Auguste led STU with 14 points as one of three Bobcats to score in double figures, while registering a game-high three steals.  Chakari Merritt scored 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field.  Katie  Rienas added 10 points and pulled down six rebounds.  

Ebony Griffin recorded a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with two steals and a blocked shot. 

STU battled a slow start, trailing 21-15 after the first quarter and 44-25 at the intermission.  The Bobcats came out of the halftime locker room energized however, blazing off an 8-0 run fueled by Merritt and Rienas.  

STU inched continued to cut into the deficit, outscoring MTU 18-2 in the third quarter.

Trailing by only three points at the start of the fourth quarter, the Bobcats were not able to overtake the Diggers.  Montana Tech outscored STU 28-20 to put away the game in the fourth.

St. Thomas continues its road trip in Montana with a game Wednesday night vs. Carroll College in Helena, Mont.
